team coverage. and bernadette woods is following the storms. >> particularly just south of leonard town. you can see that cell right now, that little boxed area right there just to the south of leonard town, if you are in the line of that storm, it's moving to the southeast. south of leonard town at about 124 24 miles per hour. take shelter, although we have no reports of tornado, it's possible that a rotation may be coming out of this cell. indicated that little barack in it shows it's very heavy storms. more than likely we're seeing hail. perhaps an isolated tornado could come out of that cell. south of leonard town, it's going to probably move south of the patomic. perhaps we'll have a cancellation, around the rest of the state. you see it continue off to the east, southeast. we still have activity to the

west of the region. most of the showers south of baltimore, a little just to the west, the baltimore region is not really showing a whole lot of activity, we do have shower activity, that will affect the baltimore area. bernadette has a look at the current region. sun in some spots, and that's what causing these storms to be so severe. >> sunshine did come out. that's what's fueling those storms. we've been locked in the clouds here. that's why as the thunderstorms to the west move our way. they are sort of dying out. but across to the south. tornado warnings in effect, as bob as telling you about, it's toward st. charles countiful that is going to continue until 6:15, you see we've jumped through several of these graphics here. a few rumbles of thunder. as far as rein fall goes, incredibly impressive. over 3-inches, nearly 4-inches

in fredricks. that's what's going to add up with this next round of storms. downtown 1.65-inches of rain. most came in a three hour period last night. hagerstown on the way back up. right now back inside. >> thank you, bernadette and bob. first warning weather coverage continues now with weijia jiang. she's live in north baltimore. she's live with the flooding and storms. >> the water level is higher than normal and the water itself is still rushing, because even though it's not raining right now. the effects of the storm are very visible across the area. >> reporter: a massive oak tree snaps into pieces toppling on to power lines and an elica city neighborhood. creating a disaster for near by homeowners. the tree just one of many casualties of the powerful storm. >> drivers in the area had much to deal with too.

some flooded rants were shut down for showers. a delay that was not only inconvenient but dangerous as drivers drove around standing water. though nature's heavy rain, public work's authorities say so does man. there are 33,000 storm drains where water is expected to run through the city, but most are clogged up with litter. >> every time you drop something, every time you leave something, every time you don't sweep your gutters, sweep your curves, that's going to go into if storm drain. they will get clogged or it'll go down to the harbor or both. >> reporter: that very back up can cause flooding in residential neighborhoods as well. >> there's all this traffic, it gets into the storm drain, it blocks up. that issue is constant unless we all basically change our behaviors, it's going to

continue. >> reporter: and since this storm first hit, pge crews have restored power to 24,000 customers, there are still a handful of customers without service. but crews continue to work the night. reporting live in northwest baltimore, weijia jiang. >> for updates any time, log on to wjz.com. tragedy in baltimore county, a young woman was struck and killed pushing a baby in a stroller in front of her. mike hellgren has more on her death and what happened to the baby. >> reporter: she was headed home here near patterson park when this incident happened. her son is okay tonight, he's healthy, smiling. you will see him in just a minute. the investigation into how his mom died is still wide open. 17-year-old mavi moreno

maldonado died while trying to cross this busy stretch of philadelphia road. >> we worried last night, because she left to the wal- mart store. go to buy something. and she didn't come back. >> reporter: wjz described the gruesome scene as she was heading to the bus stop and a ford pickup hit her. >> the guy slammed on his breaks, but slammed on them too late. the lady had the stroller, the lady pushed the stroller out of the way. and she landed under the truck. >> reporter: we stopped bid mr. catabi's home here in essex. he was not home, and the

relative that was there says she hasn't spoken to him about the accident. >> we're not sure why he may have lost control or what happened to him that caused him to strike the woman. >> that was his second accident in two weeks coming off this ramp here. >> reporter: her family is also giving thanks that little darling survived. >> we are happy because we got the baby. a number of people who use this intersection tell us that it's dangerous and needs to be redesigned. it's right near the entrance ramp to the beltway so it gets a lot of traffic. reporting live, mike hellgren, eyewitness news. >> the victim died a short time after being taken to shock trauma. doctors examined her son, she had no injuries. the investigation continues into the death of a principal.

hundreds remembered him at his wake including hundreds of students from shaw middle cool. >> he was my best friend. he helped me be the person i am today. >> to some of us he was a father, a mentor, an important person. >> he's like a true father to me and i loved him dearly. >> reporter: the parents of betts and siblings greeted mourners. >> just to lose somebody to close, because he wasn't just a person, he was like a best friend. >> if we had problems he always found a way to help us. he was like the best principal

we ever had. >> reporter: while children try to comprehend the incomprehensible, police say two people may have been involved in betts murder. he was shot in an upstairs bedroom. and people report seeing a silver vehicle leaving the home. >> the person who killed principal betts took like a second father to me. >> he was the only person we had to help us move forward. now we have to do it by ourselves. >> i love him so much and it's not a goodbye, but i will see him soon. >> police are still trying to find out why someone killed betts. investigators will be looking into his lifestyle and acquaintances he may have met online. vic, back to you. >> a public memorial service will be held this saturday in bethesda. anne arundel medical county is still looking for a suspect. jessica cartalia is following

the story in the newsroom, jessica. >> reporter: police rushed for reports of a shooting. police say this man, 19-year- old lewis dwayne edwards shot another 19-year-old man in the parking lot before fleeing the scene. the shooting appears to be the result of an argument between the two men. the victim was rushed to shock trauma in serious but stable condition. an arrest is out for edwards on attempted first degree murder and other charges. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous, denise. >> thank you, jessica. anyone with information on edwards where abouts is asked to call 911 immediately. police arrested three people for an armed robbery. in custody shaffer and 17-year- old dillan fredrickson. police are looking for this man, 20-year-old troy taylor and a third suspect. the men broke into an apartment and stole a number of items including laptops and a gaming system. a patrol accident is under

investigation. a group of children celebrating a birthday ended up on an unplanned ride. >> reporter: lakesville volunteer company's engine was parked with eight children inside, when it suddenly took off down the street and crashed into a tree. >> it was able to stop the truck where one of the brothers, leaped from the back, and grabbed the wheel. >> reporter: nobody was hurt but it was a pretty closed call. >> there were other cars parked here. there was a big truck over here. could have been very serious because the children were, most of them were standing in the truck not belting down or anything. >> reporter: the fire truck was in the pasadena neighborhood for a birthday party. a request granted by the volunteer firefighters as a public courtesy. >> we had the children climb in the engine, which aparticipantly they do -- >> kind of like a show and tell.

the disaster of a rig that exploded a week ago is spilling thousands of the gallons of oil into the gulf.

the alarming discovery a mile beneath the gulf's surface. oil escaping at the rate of a thousand barrels or 42,000- gallons a day. that may be small compared to the veliz in 2009, but it is still a big problem. >> our goal is to restrict the spill -lt. >> reporter: high seas suspended clean up efforts for a second day on sunday, but the the coast is safe for now. >> we don't see any impact to any shoreline at least within the next three days. >> reporter: officials are using robotic submarines to try to shut off the leaks in the next 24 to 36 hours. >> work crews will try to drill a relief well to try to cut off the flow but that could take several months. a long sur serving state senator hased thed not to run

produce a water spout, south of cob point. it did produce 1 inch hail in a little place called avenue out there. it's a very small area. that particular cell although it's not showing cell at this particular minute, it still has some possible rotations with it. it did cause that waterspout over the patomic. so there's still a possibility of producing perhaps a funnel cloud. it's moving to the southeast there, so if you're down in an area and you can see us, take shelter. that whole area there, the whole point there, maybe point look at st. mary's college. if you're in the school there, take shelter in a sturdy building under lock there. this has happened before in the area. just edge on the side of caution in case that cell produces a tornado.

the rest of the region. we still have showers in the region. the heaviest activity for the bay. that's moving across the bay. it should weaken as it runs into colder more stable air. take a look at temperatures around the area. we are at 57 now. east winds at five. the barometer still quite low. wind wise, winds out of the east now, very late here. of course in those thunderstorms up to 50, maybe 60-mile-per-hour winds. 57 here, warmer in richmond. that helped to fuel these storms as it moved to the east right now over southern maryland. as these storms cross the bay, they should weakening considerably, one cell, one area of low pressure that is to our west over west virginia, that is slowly, finally exiting the area. which is going to take probably overnight. we still have a chance of winds and thunderstorms. as the winds go back to the

northwest, we'll start clearing out. that looks like that will be the picture. tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night, and looks like nice weather into wednesday and the rest of the week. they'll be breezy tomorrow, advisory on the bay during the day and into wednesday. tonight then, showers, maybe some thunder, and maybe some drizzle around here. obviously the thunderstorms are well to our south. in the morning, then sun, breezy. getting drier during the afternoon. a chilly but clear night in the area for tomorrow night. >> good. >> okay, thank you. thank you, bob. >> i think i might go with a grown up next time. lost in the florida wilderness, setting off a massive search. deadly virus, pet adoptions put on hold at shelter, find out why. the damage is still being

it is just before 6:30, 57 degrees with clouds and a few scattered storms. good evening everyone, thanks for staying with wjz. a tornado warning remains in effect for parts of the state. >> we're talking about extreme southern portions of the st. mary's county. between leonard town and st. mary city. that area down there. st.george park and dreden and pine landing. it's moving pretty much quickly right now at 29 miles per hour. it has weakened, we're not seeing the heavier hail that we saw earlier. but there certainly could be some tornado activity with this. we've had rotation reported. we did have a waterspout reported south of cob point at

personal. he grew up here. because of the sheer magnitude of destruction, the national weather service says it may not understand the full scope of the deadly storms until tuesday. in new york, terrell brown, wjz eyewitness news. now our weather coverage continues with meteorologist bernadette woods. more details on the powerful weekend storms, bern. >> these were insense storms not just in the strength they had but in the size they had. we're going to get to that in just a moment. these storms came in as an ef4 on the destruction scan. that is almost the top level scale that we do have for tornadoes. these are the estimated winds that we have associated with an ef4. this is how large it was, we switch it over to that next graphic there. what we are dealing with the storms, 1.75 miles wide. the tornado alone, and the path at least 97 miles long because the thing is, there's still investigating and assessing

was alone for days. >> finally mr. king found me. and that was the greatest things that ever happened to me. the scariest thing i saw, is when it became night and i was afraid they would never find me. like i didn't see anything scary, but i felt scared. >> absolutely, you can understand that. nadia was hungry and dehydrated but was found to be okay when she buzz was taken to the hospital. >> nadia says the next time she goes out exploring, she will tell her parents first. and there's a feline virus going around. it can spread among cats for 30 days or more. the shelter is immediately vaccinating any cats that that are brought to it. but the society is asking for anyone who finds stray cats to hold on to them before bringing them in. mortgage fraud in maryland

was the sixth worse in the nation last year. the state has 36% more reported fraud than the national average. inflated appraisal was among the problems. florida was second followed by new york. the study comes from the mortgage research institute. republicans blocked efforts on over hauling the regulatory system. joel brown reports on what happens next. >> reporter: democrats are looking for cracks in the republicans wall of opposition to their financial reform bill. >> today we are no better off than we were 18 months ago. the republicans will not let me pass the bill. >> reporter: the gop wants a

deal beforehand and without it all 41 republicans say they'll vote no. >> we are negotiating for a better piece of legislation. like for the sake of the land. >> reporter: both sides predict congress will ultimately agree on a reform bill and public opinion is leaning that way too. the firm is accused of mid- leading investors. and the case could add fuel to the case on tuesday. but republicans say they are not on board with the reform bill until it include guarantees of no more bail outs and there's still disagreement on how hard to crack down on derivatives. >> we're not going to be rushed into another massive bill bassed on the assurances of our friend on the other side. >> reporter: the house has

the centers for disease control has starting newdata about the state of our health. 45% of americans, almost half the entire adult population has high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. conditions that are killing us. >> each one of these conditions is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. >> even more frightening, the study finds 13% of americans have two of the conditions and 3% are struggling with all three. the cause, signs point to americans growing waistline. we are eating too much and exercising too little. the latest statistics show that 1/3 of americans are obese. >> when you eat a lot of fast food and always on the run and don't make good food choices you can end up in that situation. >> reporter: one in seven adults did not even know they were sick with these

a minnesota community mourns the loss of six teenage

girls. four were passengers in a pontiac. the principal of the girl's school says the community there is still trying to wrap their heads around such a tragic loss. >> we lost three beautiful girls, and they were very well liked and very well loved by students and staff. investigators say that none of the girls was wearing a seat belt and they hope the tragedy reminds people to buckle up. classes will be cancelled later this week to allow the girl's friends to attend their funeral services. steelers quarterback ben roethlisberger says he will not appeal the six game suspension he will serve for the sex abuse allegations against him. for the first time the player apologized to his teammates. roethlisberger said he did not commit a crime but he will not put himself in a situation like

at this hour, some powerful storms are rolling through the state as we've been reporting. bernadette woods is live with what we can expect tomorrow. but first bob is going to update these severe storms. >> reporter: there's still is a pretty good storm out there between st. mary city and ridge and southern portions of the st. mary's county. that storm was very strong earlier. and they produced what we believed to be a waterspout over the patomic. right now we still have some more showers around the region.

most of the active táeu has weakening considerably. we will still see some activity here. thunder, lightning, that little cell south of west minster all moving to the east northeast. more stuff coming overnight, looks like big improvement however coming by tomorrow afternoon. bernadette-- >> showers just started outside here in tv hill as i've come out. but the thing is we could still some thunderstorms as i just said through the evening before that starts to wind down. the showers though, probably lingering overnight. start out the day, still showers around but through the afternoon, that will come to an end. eventually the winds picking out of the northwest are going to bring about the return of sunshine before the sun sets. tomorrow still a cool day only topping out in the mid-60s. for the rest of the day here's bob. >> wednesday morning you might see temps as low as 38, 39
